Presbyterians in Round Rock, Our History...
Our Presbyterian roots go deep in the history of central Texas and Williamson county area. Presbyterians first formed a church in Round Rock in 1854, but the county seat moved to Georgetown and the Presbyterians moved with it.
Around 1881, Presbyterians not only formed a church in Round Rock, they established a secondary school, Round Rock Institute. The Presbyterian Church, then a Cumberland Presbyterian Church, dissolved in the 1920's and Presbytery sold the building to the First Baptist Church where it can still be seen today at 306 Round Rock Avenue.
In 1980 Presbyterians began to plan a new Presbyterian Church in Round Rock. The first worship service took place on World Communion Sunday, October 1984, at the Round Rock High School.
In April 1985 commissioners from Mission Presbytery and South Texas Presbytery organized the Round Rock Presbyterian Church with 155 present in worship. The new congregation had 132 charter members.
In April 1986, Mission Presbytery, with cooperation from South Texas Presbytery purchased the present church site at 4010 Sam Bass Road . Worship services continued at the high school until completion of the present structure in November, 1988. In May of 1995 the church purchased four more acres of land immediately adjacent to its western boundary from Mission Presbytery, bringing its present acreage to almost nine acres of property. With the rapid growth the congregation has experienced in recent years, plans are to use this additional acreage for a new sanctuary and expanded education and fellowship space.
With consistent steady growth, we expanded to two morning worship services in May 1994. In early 1998 our second service was full to capacity at 200. A Building Committee was formed and we chose an architect firm in the fall. By the end of 1999, a new master plan was accepted by the congregation and a Capital Campaign was completed to fund our new sanctuary.
The year 2001 marked a substantial undertaking for this congregation. In February we held an official groundbreaking for our much anticipated new sanctuary. Construction began in earnest in early April 2001. The new sanctuary marks a significant event for Round Rock Presbyterian Church’s history and we look forward to the increased space and mission initiatives that will be afforded within its gracious and inviting space.
